Four deliberate choices behind every budget.
Each one maps directly to a concrete behaviour in the product — no marketing shortcuts.
Scope a wallet, or a single category
A budget is attached to one wallet — personal or shared — and can optionally target a single category inside it (e.g., “Groceries” inside the household wallet). Everything else is ignored so the number stays meaningful.
Monthly, or any custom rolling window
Pick a calendar month anchored to any day, or set a custom length in days (for example every 14 or 28 days). Periods roll forward automatically; the next window starts the day the previous one ends.
Progress from real activity, never estimated
The amount spent is the exact sum of the transactions inside the period, in the budget’s currency — using the same stored rates your wallet already trusts. What you see always matches the wallet, no manual sync, no drift.
Budget alerts — fixed on Free, custom on Premium
Every plan gets automatic budget alerts at 80% and 100% usage, triggered as you spend, with no setup required. Premium unlocks custom thresholds: define 1 to 5 values between 1% and 100%, per budget. Alerts trigger when spending crosses each value. No daily nudges, no streaks, no gamification.
What BudgetLuma budgets are not.
We keep the scope narrow on purpose. These boundaries are what make the numbers trustworthy.
Not manual sync
You never have to “refresh” a budget. Every transaction you or a shared wallet member adds is immediately reflected in the budget’s progress.
Not a forecast pretending to be reality
BudgetLuma also offers a monthly run-rate projection in Insights, but it is clearly labelled, hidden when the data is too sparse to be meaningful, and separate from your budget progress.
Not envelope budgeting
There are no envelopes to pre-fund, no ritual of moving money across buckets. A budget is just a target measured against what actually happened.
A budget per context, calmly separated.
Give daily spending, a trip, a savings pot, or a household their own wallet — and their own budget, in the currency that context actually lives in. Nothing gets mixed; nothing pulls the wrong direction.
Wallet-level budget
Keep an eye on a whole wallet — every expense, every category, every member — against one monthly or rolling target.
Category-level budget
Target exactly one category inside a wallet — for example groceries inside the household pot — without creating a whole new wallet.
Shared wallet budget
A budget on a shared wallet reflects every member’s transactions — spelled out in plain numbers, not a judgement of who spent more.
Archivable, not destructive
When a season ends, archive the budget. It stops counting, but your transactions stay exactly where they are.
Budget tracking — questions answered honestly
Are budgets free or Premium?
Budget tracking is available on every plan. Free gets automatic budget alerts at 80% and 100% usage, with no configuration. Premium adds custom alert thresholds — 1 to 5 values between 1% and 100%, per budget — on top of unlimited wallets, shared wallets, custom exchange rates, the display currency override, Premium Insights and custom categories.
Can one budget cover more than one wallet?
A budget is attached to a single wallet. If you want to track multiple wallets together, Premium Insights offers cross-wallet totals and currency breakdowns, labelled with the reference rates used.
Does a budget work on shared wallets?
Yes. A budget attached to a shared wallet counts all members’ transactions inside the chosen period. Roles still apply — viewers see everything, editors can add transactions, only the owner manages membership.
What happens when a transaction is in a different currency than the budget?
Every BudgetLuma transaction already stores the converted amount in the wallet’s base currency, with the exchange rate used. The budget inherits that stored value — no second conversion, no drift, no silent rounding.
Can I change alert thresholds?
On Free, alerts are fixed at 80% and 100% usage — no setup required. With Premium, you can define custom thresholds per budget: 1 to 5 values between 1% and 100%. Alerts trigger when your spending crosses each value.
What if I archive a budget?
Archived budgets stop counting and stop emitting alerts. Your historical transactions are untouched.
